Madeleine Tourelle, M.A.

Madeleine attended Florida Atlantic University (FAU) from 2018 to 2022 and completed both a B.A. in Geosciences with a focus in Geography and Minor in Geology, as well as an M.S. in Geosciences with a focus in GIS. Her passion for GIS also led her to receive 3 certifications whilst completing her degrees: a GIS certification, an Advanced GIS certification, as well as a LiDAR & Remote Sensing certification.

During her time at FAU, Madeleine volunteered for the Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge to help their senior biologist map the refuge's air boat trails so they could perform habitat impact analysis for the local wildlife. Upon graduating, she worked as an OPS GIS Research Assistant contracted by FDEM, FEMA and Panama City at FAU. Her current position at University of Miami’s Comprehensive Center for Brain Health as a GIS Research Associate is largely focused on providing and producing GIS data and community maps of South Florida to assist Dr. Lilah Besser in completing research related to the relationship between Alzheimer's Disease & Related Dementias (ADRD) and social determinants of health. Madeleine's projects are specifically focused on Lake Okeechobee during their sugar cane burn and non-burn seasons, however she is also involved in other projects that are more centered on Broward and Miami-Dade County.

Madeleine hopes to expand her professional career in GIS through completion of a PhD in Geosciences, which she aims to start in the Fall of 2025 at FAU. Her PhD will be focused in cultural and spatial ecology of the Everglades, which will combine GIS, GPS, digital/hyperspectral image analysis, remote sensing and spatial visualization.

Post-Doc, Madeleine hopes to continue to explore the relationship between humans and their impact on the environment by specializing in hyperspectral imagery, LiDAR and Object-Based Image Analysis.
