our team conducts research on green space, the built environment, and brain health.

Our mission: Discover how neighborhood infrastructure influences brain health and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, to ultimately guide future urban plans, policies, and interventions for brain health promotion.

What is the Florida neighborhood Geospacial Project?

The Florida Neighborhoods Geospatial Project (FANGAP) is an online mapping site and data library comprising neighborhood-level built and social environment measures created for Dr. Besser’s research projects. The maps and measures generated by our studies are publicly available.

What we use

Our team uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a powerful mapping and spatial analytics tool. We utilize GIS tools and data to generate maps and conduct spatial analyses, enabling us to effectively visualize and examine the unequal distribution of greenspace and other health-promoting built environments. GIS integrates various types of data to create detailed maps and visualizations, providing insights through spatial relationships, patterns, and trends.
